Bestest Friends

Bestest Friends

Meet Gracie, she is the bestest friend of C’s. Gracie is about 13 years old now, and has grown up with C since she was 3 years old. They just adore each other, and a few years ago I took some images of them together to celebrate that bond. We created some fantasy conceptual images that C and I collaborated on, she had some great ideas, and we had a blast. Fast forward 4 years and I get an inquiring from the family regarding an updated session, specifically for Gracie, and C.

You see, Gracie got into a bit of a row with a raccoon and although she won the little tussle the whole thing caused her family to realize how special and how short our pets lives are. The incident also induced some nightmares for C who began to worry about losing her bestest friend. As a young girl, your dog or cat really is your everything. I mean you tell your bestest’s all your fears, dreams, and frustrations. And this is the type of bond that they have. So of course when we booked in right away, in one of my favorite spots to shoot sessions and even with the threat of rain we had moments of gorgeous light, lots of laughter, created memories and captures some beautiful pieces.

Pet Sitting, Puppy Parks and Portraits

My girlfriend is pet sitting this weekend, It’s the first time having a dog in the house since her’s crossed the rainbow bridge a few months back. We chatted about how weird it might be with a dog in the house and maybe it push her over the edge into looking for a new family member. She used to work with rescue organizations around the island and let it slip, they had already started looking. After us chatting a bit, I mentioned I would love to work outdoors with new dogs to trial a new lens I had. I am always loving the soft backgrounds so I was hoping to capture that. The biggest challenge was where to shoot, so I picked a dog park. Now, to be fair, that could have been bad news, considering there is only 1 fully enclosed dog park in Duncan, and bringing a new dog into that environment, along with equipment, oh and my own puppy to have a play day may have been a bad idea. So we booked for 330 slot, and when I arrived the park was very quiet which was perfect…. Tabitha (the pupper), Bonnie and Michael showed up just a few seconds later, and after a little social time, we got down to business.

The weather was just right, with some cloud cover, so we got to work, and Tabitha nailed it. Of course her handler (Bonnie) having worked with me before knew exactly what to do and oh yes … TREATS! ( I don’t suggest bringing too many treats into a dog park you basically become a treat beacon for everyone.)

So we worked for a little while and a few more dogs came in, but we had the chance to capture these images below of Tabitha, who’s parents have no idea this session happened so SURPRISE Michael and Michelle Sansregret! Your dog is a superstar.

Glowing Francine

Maternity Glamour Outdoors

I met Francine through her amazing makeup skills and we have work together in the past so when she asked if I would do her images I was over the moon thrilled. One thing about this mamma is the amount of faith she has and how much thought she put into her session. This is her second child and she made sure to have some little details to include her entire family. There were candles with 3 wicks to represent her growing little family, a henna tattoo done by Charcoal - Eclectic Artisan Emporium and Henna Lounge collaborated with her eldest daughter on outfit choice and styling (can you say awe) and had some pintrest ‘inspo’ on hand.

I picked her up at her home and met Sarah Bowman who agreed to create some BTS video footage (thank you so much), and we all headed out to one of her favorite summer swimming holes - Nanaimo River just out by Cassidy. We arrived and immediately spotted a berry bush of sorts that just screamed at us, it was so colorful, we had to play. After spending some time shooting we moved on down to the river stopping along the way to shoot with beautiful cedar trees and some candles. We finally made it to the river only to sit and stare at the rushing waters and enjoy a little moment of wonder. We finished our session by the river and headed back to the car to end the day.

You can find the Talented artist who did the henna at Charcoal - Eclectic Artisan Emporium and Henna Lounge

Hi, I'm Bobby.

2018 was my year, I turned 50, I went on my first cruise and I attended my first photography conference out of town.. in Joshua Tree California. I loved it. I had the opportunity to shoot a few different models and I met and shot (very briefly) Bobby Jamal Pitts who was modelling with a small group of very talented photogs. They had him posing and moving and covered in fabric and flapping fabric to catch the wind. At one point he was covered head to toe in this white fabric and the wind picked up and took it off his face to reveal this expression of peace and groundedness. So, I screwed up my courage and ran over to ask if I could intrude and take a few shots, I already knew the look I wanted. I wrapped him and asked him to settle into a more feminine expression and pose and this is what we got. I truly wanted to create something different with the image, a feeling of a painting. Hope you enjoy. Please head over to Bobby’s page and check out his other works. IG is

Creative Maternity Sessions

Women are amazing, especially when they are pregnant.  It is such a special time, of miracles, and beauty.  I am always awed by a woman's beauty at any stage of her pregnancy and I am thrilled when I get to do creative maternity sessions.  A creative session could include fancy maternity dresses with billowing or flowing fabrics, nudes or semi nudes in nature to capture that connection to mother earth, studio sessions with a more magazine style (I personally loved Demi Moore’s cover).   If you are expecting I urge  you to book a session and capture this time... it is truly magical.

Tips for Beautiful Fall or Winter Photos

There is a special kind of magic that comes with outdoor, fall photo sessions. The leaves are changing color, and covering the ground. There is a crispness in the air and a glow to the light that creates a lovely backdrops at this time of year.   If you are looking to book a session here’s a few tips to make your session go smoothly.

1.       Dress warmly. You will be surprised at how often this is overlooked. Since you’ll be standing outside for a long period of time think of layering your look.  A great jacket, warm sweater, shrug or scarf and gloves will be welcome.  Trust me, shivering makes it hard to stay relaxed, enjoy your session and pose properly. I suggest investing in hot pockets

2.       Bring heat packs with you. This is an add on to dressing warmly particularly if it is a winter shoot. Be prepared with reusable or disposable hot packs that can provide instant heat to warm your hands and body.

3.       Watch the weather. Fall days in my neck of the woods usually means misty rain or fog, which may not be the images you want. If you are looking for bright sunny fall day, try and keep an eye on the weather forecast to make sure that you don’t end up with a downpour.

4.       Be flexible. If the weather isn't exactly what you had hoped for, see if you can still make the photo session work.  Perhaps adding a nice umbrella would give you fun fall images as well.   If your photographer is agreeable, reschedule the date.  However, if you were scheduling this session in advance, you may just have to work with the weather on that particular day.

5.       Incorporate color. Even though fall and winter have some amazing colors to work with, why not wear a splash of color to really stand out in your photos? For example, vibrant shades of blues and greens look amazing amongst crunchy brown leaves.

6.       Plan your day. The best time for taking photos is just after the sun rises or just before it sets.  You will get amazing light so plan your session around those golden times.

Finally, take some hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate along to make your photo session even more enjoyable, oh and hey include that in the shoot as a prop! Here’s to fall sessions and some beautiful photo memories.
