How to Book a Professional Dog Photoshoot on Vancouver Island

Even If You’ve Never Done One Before

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love some beautiful photos of my dog, but I have no idea how this works,” you’re not alone. Booking a professional dog photoshoot can sound intimidating — but it doesn’t have to be. This guide walks you through everything in plain language so you know what to look for, what to ask, and how to make it an experience you’ll actually enjoy.

Start by looking at different photographers’ styles. Every photographer has their own “look.” Some photos feel dramatic and artistic, others are bright, playful, or natural. Before you even worry about prices, scroll through local photographers’ websites or Instagram pages and ask yourself: do these photos make me feel something, can I picture my dog in these kinds of photos, and do I like the editing — soft and natural or bold and moody? If you say yes to those questions, you’ve probably found someone whose work matches your taste.

Next, think about the experience you want. Some photographers work fast — you show up, they snap a few shots, and you get digital files. Others offer more of a full experience — planning help, outfit ideas, guidance during the session, and a chance to see your images before choosing prints or wall art. Ask yourself if you just want a few quick photos for social media or if you want something special enough to hang on your wall. Your answer will help you decide between a simple “mini” session and a full, custom experience.

Once you’ve found a photographer whose work you love, reach out and ask questions. You don’t need to know any special lingo — just talk about your dog’s personality and what kind of photos you’d love. A good photographer will walk you through everything. Great questions to ask include what’s included in the session fee, how long the session is, whether they help pick the location, if your dog can stay on leash, and when you’ll see the photos.

When you’re ready, book your date. Most photographers require a session fee to officially reserve your spot, which covers planning, the session itself, and their time and expertise. After your session, you’ll choose your favorite images and decide whether you want digital files, prints, or wall art. Good photographers often book up a few weeks or months in advance, especially in spring and fall, so it’s worth planning early.

Preparing for your session is easy. Your photographer should give you tips, but generally, give your dog a quick brush and a light walk before the session, bring small treats and a toy, and choose a clean collar or harness. If you’ll be in the photos too, wear something that feels like “you,” in colors that go well with your dog. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s comfort. The best sessions feel relaxed and fun, not forced or formal.

On the day of your photoshoot, expect a lot of praise, treats, and goofy noises from behind the camera. A good pet photographer will make sure your dog feels safe and comfortable. Don’t worry if your dog doesn’t “behave” perfectly — that’s totally normal. Experienced photographers know how to work with movement, chaos, and drool, and still get beautiful images.

A week or two later, you’ll get to see your photos — either in person or over Zoom — and this is where the magic happens. You’ll pick your favorites and decide how you’d like to display them, whether as prints, a wall piece, or digital files. Most people are surprised by how emotional this part feels — in the best way.

Once your artwork arrives, hang it proudly. You’ll never regret having photos of the dog who’s shared your life — whether they’re still a puppy or starting to get a little grey around the muzzle.

Booking a dog photoshoot on Vancouver Island really comes down to four simple things: find a photographer whose work you love, ask questions until you feel comfortable, pay your session fee to reserve your spot, and then show up, have fun, and let your dog be themselves. It’s that simple — and totally worth it.
