Some dogs show up to a session ready to work the camera. Others arrive knowing the camera is there to work for them.

Meet Barkus, a 13-year-old Standard Poodle who falls firmly into the latter camp — a senior statesman with opinions, impeccable curls, and just enough attitude to make you earn his attention.

Barkus was our October Giveaway Winner, scoring a complimentary portrait session and a $150 product credit. When I chatted with his mom, Renee, on our planning call, she laughed and warned me, “He can’t be bribed with treats.” Challenge accepted.

Fast forward to our session at Rotary Park, Barkus’s favourite walking spot — crisp fall air, golden light, leaves crunching underfoot — and let’s just say, we discovered his soft spot: Fromm Crunchy O’s Peanut Butter treats and Crumps Semi-Moist Duck & Beef Mini Trainers. Turns out, every gentleman has his price.

Between the poses, the sniff breaks, and the occasional side-eye of approval ( or judgement we are not quitesure), we captured portraits that show his personality: confident, wise, and still just a little playful. In the end, Renee used her product credit toward a Canvas  Wrap— a timeless piece to hang at home and a copy to share on socials.

At thirteen, Barkus still has that signature poodle spring in his step — it’s just delivered with a bit more of a wobble these days. Here’s to Barkus — proof that style, wit, and a taste for fine snacks only get better with age.
